The dolls with movable joints which have been made since Edo period; action figure, so to speak.
Though the joints of neck, arms and legs can be moved freely, it stands by itself making us feel sort of an imposing air.
When you hold it, it is surprisingly light. It is made of cut and carved paulownia wood and finished with whitewash. Head, arms and legs are tied with strings made of twisted tree bark, and that makes it possible for the joints to move freely.
Despite the fact being 90 years old, he, with full of energy, simply faces the wood and starts to carve out the body using saw and chisel. There is no such thing as design drawing. Then he carves the face to match the body. After that, he carefully draws eyes and hair. It takes quite a long time to make just one doll and of course, each doll is unique.
